Roses Match. Headingly** Old Yorkshireman, flat cap, muffler, whippit, sat dourly watching the game. Next to him an enthusiastic young lad, claps every move on the field, “Well Played” Well Bowled” “Well Caught”, completely without bias. After a while t’old lad can stand it no longer “Hey, Thee” “Yes sir” “Ah tha frum Lancashire?” “No Sir” “Ah tha frum Yorkshire?” “No Sir” “Wheer Then?” “Middlesex, Sir” “Well this is nowt to do with thee, so shut thi gob” Which sums up exactly the Lancashire-Yorkshire relationship. Whatever our historic and sporting rivalries, we are family, we are THE NORTH. We stretch in a broad swathe from Scarborough and Whitby in the East to Blackpool and Southport in the west. We keep the wild and savage Scots from harrying the soft and effete South. So that is why a born and bred Yorkshireman is drinking Lancashire Tea, because they are family. So I give you a toast to my Lancastrian Tumblr friend dear Annie .
** For those not of the County Palatine or The Broad Acres the Roses Matches are Two Cricket matches played each year between Lancashire County Cricket Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, one each at their respective grounds at Old Trafford and Headingly. They are a continuation of the of The Wars of The Roses and are the most important games played in England. The only game that comes near is a Test Match against the baggy cap lot.
